Finer transport key to jobs

The rail lobby group Trains on Our Tracks says insufficient public transport is preventing jobs growth on the North Coast.

TOOT spokeswoman, Karin Kolbe says while she welcomes resources such as the recent Centrelink Jobs Expo at Goonellabah Australia, they are senseless unless people can depend on public transport to get them to work. A proper commuter-train service is required in the region because many young people can't afford to buy their own car. If we had trains as part of a transport system then a lot more people would be able to get a job.

Timber workers want support for Forest Enterprises Australia

Timber workers have blamed the Tasmanian Government for being unsuccessful to prop up ailing timber company Forest Enterprises Australia.
Forest Enterprises Australia four cent shares have been delayed for two weeks, with the company fighting to re-organize its debt of $216-million.

Forest Enterprises Australia has informed the stock exchange its demand for financial assistance had been denied, but thanked the Government for its efforts.

The Economic Development Minister tells the government is continuing to work with Forest Enterprises Australia, and will provide support for workers.

Timber Communities Australia says that is not good enough.

Timber Communities Australia expect that the government can analyze that decision because Forest Enterprises Australia is a vitally valuable company to Tasmania's economy and it provides employment for regional communities throughout Tasmania.

Timber Communities Australia says the government has propped up many companies and Forest Enterprises Australia should be no different.

With the difficulties that our dairy industry was encountered with only last year and the lack of assistance that's been supplied to the farming community and we would hope that whoever is the new government after the election next weekend can examine visually at doing whatever it can to help this Tasmanian company.

United States president Barack Obama says while I'm there I'll visit Indonesia and Australia, two vibrant economies and democracies that will be critical partners for the United States. In both countries I'll feature the role that American businesses play there, and emphasize how powerful economic partnerships can produce jobs on both sides of the Pacific.

New figures show the US trade shortage has reduced lightly to just over $37 billion, but exports and imports both refused.

The unemployment rate soars to 5.3 % in February

That means January's remarkable fall in unemployment from 5.5% was even greater than initially reported 5.3 % but it also makes today's figures look lightly worse.

The February figures which showed the production of only 400 extra jobs frustrated analysts, but not by much.

The average prediction in Bloomberg's survey of 25 economists was for an increase of 15,000 jobs, which would have left the jobless rate constant at 5.3%.

The Bureau of Statistics survey was that full-time employment raised by 11,400, while it was part-time employment down 11,000.

That means combined monthly hours worked raised 2.4% last month.

The headline number was smoother than expected but the details of the report are anything but smooth. We had the 6 straight month of growth in full-time jobs and unemployment remains close to the ground in other word low, and fell further in New South Wales, senior economist at Macquarie, told Reuters.

There was also a big jump in combine hours worked, which is inspiring.

However, it does give the RBA cover should they select not to explore in April. That's still a tight call.

Fruit Pickers Deported

The Immigration Department last night sent home 76 illegal foreign workers the largest deportation of workers from Australia in 10 years.

The foreign nationals from Malaysia, Indonesia, Korea and Nepal had been working illegally as fruit pickers in Victoria's Goulburn Valley.

Immigration Department spokesman Sandi Logan says the department is proud of the operation, which resulted in 90 illegal workers being arrested during a raid on a caravan park last week in Mooroopna.

Immigration Department spokesman Sandi Logan says the employers could face severe penalties for hiring illegal workers.

The important message here is not only for those who are arrested for illegally working, but particularly for employers, that this is a very serious offence," Sandi Logan said.
